Little Lies

IMG_1523.JPG

The wind moaned through leaning pines, and sideways snow crusted over a landscape already draped in invisibly layered ice. The air sharp and breath-taking bowed swaying branches fighting to keep the leaves of Summer. A hunched gray squirrel perched in the cold clinging tightly to one high branch. What brought this daring venturer out on a day when he should be in a long deep rest, curled within the warmth nest made for a long Winter? Was it to shred one last pinecone or a dare from his ne’er do well neighbor bent on thieving a hidden Winter bounty?

How’s the Weather?

For those who live in Wyoming or have experienced Wyoming on a long-term, intimate level, you know the expression “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes” most certainly was coined by a Wyomingite (yes Wyoming-“ite” not Wyoming-“an”/”ian” which just sounds too silly).

A story shared by my hubby “Captain my Captain” help put the weather we have into bold perspective. On the computers at work they have an intranet which utilized sanitized, scanned and guaranteed virus free widgets and gadgets; one being for the weather. A visitor to the office wondered aloud what how the weather was so one of the “administrative assistants” (a secretary in my old-fashioned world) checked her computer screen and sees the weather widget says “F & Cloudy” and tells the visitor just that, “It’s F ‘n Cloudy”. All had a good chuckle.

As Captain my Captain tells me the story I think, this is Wyoming weather forecasting at it’s best. To the untrained non-Wyomingite “F &” equals “Fair and”. In the language of Wyoming, it’s”F___ ‘n”, so when it F & Cloudy, or F & Breezy, well you get the picture. It brilliantly describes Wyoming weather and the forecasters and weather geniuses inability to correctly portray it. Only in Wyoming can the weather gods say “fair and breezy” (as it does at this exact moment)

and have the wind blowing at 23 MPH and gusting 38 MPH. Yes a wind that will knock over a petite gal (such as me) is classified as a breeze.

It’s all relative in the grand scheme of things. My best weather predictor is to stick my finger in my mouth and hold it up and say “yep! It’s a bit breezy” and then look at that stack of black clouds looming over the horizon in an angry wave and say

“looks like it’s gonna rain !” Meteorologist smeteorologist! Who needs ’em! They think “F” means fair.

Sparks and Rays

I trusted the weather forecast. I know. Big mistake, right? Well it’s April for heaven sake! When it says it’s going to be sunny and warm (50’s is warm here in Wild, Wonderful, Wacky, Windy Wyoming) I want to believe it. I MUST believe it! Especially after this long, cold, snowy, winter. I’m more than ready for a big fat dose of WARM.

I’m on a bit of a vacation since school is on break which means I don’t have to be up in the morning in wide anticipation of my beautiful granddaughters and the breakfast crunch to get my daughter ready for school.

It’s my time to catch up on missing sleep which is due to that evil time in a womans life we call “The Change”, so I slept in. I heard and felt the wind’s pressing insistence on my crappy windows throughout the night, but I was not prepared for SNOW on the ground…. AGAIN!

What is a mom and her girl to do on a shrieking, snappy day that was suppose to be nice? You climb into your “comfy clothes” (aka Boca granny velour jogging suit for me and basketball shorts and a tank top for the girl), and forget to put on your face and fix your hair. You waste some time on the computer facebooking and reading mindless junk and catch up on episodes of “No Ordinary Family” so your girl can finally talk to you about the ending. It was a day to count as good because you happened to have hoagie buns in the bread drawer so you could make “Good Friday” meatless subs and eat yogurt covered pretzels on the side for lunch.

It wasn’t really the day I hoped for but at the end, when the shuddering of the wind has subsided to a shiver, I can look back and say “Not bad! Not bad at all!” I wanted sun so we could venture outside or skip town for a road trip. Instead, I found sun within as my girl and I spent the day finding sparks and rays in the mundane.

Linking this up with The Lightning and the Lightning Bug’s “Dare to Share”

I took some liberties because here, rain is not on our minds for weather issue, rather it’s SNOW! So I changed from rain to snow for the  prompt.  🙂

It’s Dare to Share time! The theme this time is “Rainy Days” – link up your posts, old or new, about rainy days.
